Biography
Muhammad ibn Jaber ibn Abbas al-Amili al-Mashghari al-Najafi was a jurist, hadith scholar, and specialist in the biographies and evaluation of transmitters. His family was of Machghara origin, while he settled in Najaf, leading sources to describe him with both designations.
He studied with his father Jaber ibn Abbas and prominent scholars including Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Zayn al-Din, Mirza Muhammad al-Astarabadi, Shaykh al-Bahai, and Abd al-Nabi al-Jazairi. Scholars who transmitted from him included Fakhr al-Din al-Turayhi and Abd Ali al-Khumaysi.
His works included treatises on a transmitter in the chains of al-Kafi, teknonyms and titles, narrator criticism, legal usage, and an abridgment of al-Hawi. Surviving manuscripts and authorizations from the early eleventh Islamic century indicate his standing in scholarship and teaching.
