Biography
George Salim Al-Batal was born in Machghara on 15 April 1930 into a family connected to the town’s leather-tanning industry. He studied in Machghara and at several Lebanese schools and became interested in left-wing thought and labour issues while still young.
He began organised political activity in the 1950s and joined the Lebanese delegation to the 1953 World Festival of Youth and Students in Bucharest. He later held senior responsibilities in the Lebanese Communist Party and worked closely with several of its major leaders.
Al-Batal was part of the generation that led the party’s internal intellectual and political renewal and helped prepare its second congress in 1968. In his later years, extensive conversations about his political and social experience were recorded by Fawwaz Traboulsi and published under the title George Al-Batal, the Last Bolshevik.
