Al-Hurr al-Amili

Biography

Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Hurr al-Amili was born in Machghara in the seventeenth century into a family known for scholarship, jurisprudence, and literature. He received his early education in Jabal Amil before continuing his studies across several religious centres.

He became one of the best-known Twelver hadith scholars and jurists. His writings assembled and organised a vast body of transmitted material, most notably the hadith collection Wasa’il al-Shia.

He later settled in Mashhad, where he continued writing and teaching. The designation al-Mashghari remained attached to his scholarly name and preserved his connection to his birthplace.

Biographical works record that he was born in Machghara on 8 Rajab 1033 AH. He studied there under his father, uncle, and maternal grandfather before continuing his education with scholars in Jbaa and elsewhere in Jabal Amil.

His scholarly journeys took him through Iraq, the Hijaz, and Iran. He eventually settled in Mashhad, where he served as Shaykh al-Islam and chief judge while continuing to teach and write.

In addition to Wasa’il al-Shia, his works include Amal al-Amil, a biographical dictionary of Jabal Amil scholars, and al-Jawahir al-Saniyya on sacred traditions. He also left a large body of poetry and didactic verse.

Preserved an important part of Jabal Amil’s intellectual history through Amal al-Amil.
