Al-Hurr al-Amili Mosque is one of Machghara’s recognized places of worship and religious landmarks. It bears the name of Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-Hassan al-Hurr al-Amili al-Mashghari, the jurist and hadith scholar who was born in the town in 1624 and grew up and studied there before moving to Iraq and later Khurasan.
The mosque’s name connects it to Machghara’s scholarly memory and to the Al-Hurr family, one of the town’s historic learned families. Biographical sources state that al-Hurr al-Amili received his early education in Machghara from his father, relatives, and other scholars and remained in his homeland for about forty years.
Local heritage documentation records the continued presence of the mosque beside a house attributed to the shaykh, together with remains of the Al-Hurr family mill by the river, as elements of the town’s heritage that merit preservation. The published sources located for this research do not establish a reliable construction date for the present mosque building.
