You have a wonderful web site. It is particularly important to me because in viewing the pictures I can see the town of Kar'oun, across the lake. This is the birth place of my father and his family. My father, Joseph Hijazy (Jazey in english) emigrated to Canada in 1922. I visited his birthplace in 1967 and stayed with the Yassin family who lived in my family home.

Dr. Jajaa had a militia, he surely was a part of the Lebanese war, but not alone. The philosophy of the war is based on violence, killing and demolition. If you choose the war option, you can't be naive and innocent. Jajaa is definitely responsible for a part of the Lebanese civil war, just like the other militias. He was a “war prince”, but there was “war kings”. The Taeif Agreement- or so I call it entrapment- consisted of folding the war chapter, and building a new Lebanon were Christians and Muslims can live in peace. This agreement saw the light only because Dr. Jaaga was a part of it and agreed on it, and so was his mistake. But the myth of all this: “never trust the Syrian Regime”. Syria lied and still lying to the Lebanese people. I am with the prosecution and the condemnation of Dr. Jaaja but with the condemnation of Mr. Nabih Biri, Mr. Walid Joumblat, Hizb allah, al "hizib al kawmee al suri", al Mourabitoun, Harakit fateh and all the Palestinian militias. If you want to be fair you have to be equal to everybody and don't punish only one party. You can't exile "Aoun", prison Ja3jaa and kill Elie Houbaika, Dani Cham3oun and tell me you are implementing the taeif agreement. People, the Taeif was a lie and the 1559 resolution came to put the Lebanese case back on the right track. If you think Dr. Ja3jaa is a criminal that is fine with me. But who is responsible for killing Kamal joumblat, Bashir al jmaeil, Al Moufti Hassan Kahled, Reneh M3awad and the list will never end. People, you live in the 2005 you can't have the mentality of the dark ages. Lebanon is a country for the LEBANESE Christians and LEBANESE Muslims. It's not for the Syrians, Iranians or Palestinians, we can be allies with them to fight our common enemy Israel. But the Lebanese business counts first. And yes Ja3jaa is a Doctor. He's a medical family doctor gratuated from St Joseph University, but he didn’t finish his surgeon degree as he wanted to be a heart surgeon. But his nickname was given for his wisdom on the combat field “this is a rumor, not me”. Thank you.

عندما ينتصف الليل وتقرع أجراس الكنائس ويعلن ميلاد المخلص، عندما تجلس مع عائلتك حول مائدة الميلاد، تذكر كلاً من هؤلاء:
الشهداء وعائلاتهم، شهداؤنا الأحياء وعائلاتهم، المخطوفون والمفقودون وعائلاتهم، السجناء الأبرياء في السجون السورية واللبنانية وعائلاتهم، المشردون داخل الوطن وخارجه، رفاقنا المحتاجون ...ا
فهل سألت نفسك يوماً كيف تعيّد أم الشهيد؟ أو كم غصة تنغص على والدة المفقود في أقبية السجون، مثل هذه اللحظة؟ أو كيف يمضي ليلة الميلاد أهلنا المهجرون غير القادرين، بعد أكثر من 14 عاماً على انتهاء الحرب، من العودة الى كلّ قراهم؟ هؤلاء كلّهم، أين هو عيدهم؟ وأين هم من العيد الحقيقي؟ وبالتالي، أين نحن من العيد الحقيقي؟
فهل سألت نفسك يوماً، ليلة الميلاد، ما العمل لمساعدة تلك الأم التي تذرف الدمع سخياً هذه الليلة على ولدٍ أعطى أغلى ما عنده لتعيّد أنت مع عائلتك؟ أو تلك الأم التي تجلس قرب المغارة وعيناها مسمرّتان على باب المنزل، تنتظر عودة إبنها المفقود من سنين لا تعدّ ولا تحصى؟ هل فكرت يوماً، وخصوصاً في مثل هذا اليوم، بإعانة رفيق لك يرزح تحت وطأة غلاء المعيشة وتحت ضغط البطالة؟ا
ختاماً، تذكّر في هذه الليلة بأن عدداً كبيراً ممن هم حولك، قد ترسخ الوجع في صدورهم، وعندما ترفع الكأس، أطلب من المولود الجديد أن يولد في قلب كل منا، فيطرد التجار والسماسرة، على أنواعهم، من الهياكل، كلها، ويعيد الرجاء والأمل الى قلوب مَن تركناهم وحدهم.ا

المتململون الذين يطالبون بإطلاق الدكتور سمير جعجع، يدّعون في غالبيتهم انه دخل السجن ظلما، بعد ملاحقة سياسية باطلة، واتهامات جرمية زائفة، وادانات ملفقة لم تستند الى دليل. وهم يدعمون كلامهم بالقول ان جعجع هو الوحيد بين الزعماء الذي ألقي القبض عليه، والوحيد الذي تعرّض لمحاكمة. والوحيد الذي صدرت بحقه أحكام. ويضيفون ان جعجع لو قبل بما عرض عليه أو قيل له منذ أكثر من عشر سنين لكان الآن يشارك في السلطة، او يستجم في الخارج، أو في أسوأ الاحوال بعيداً عن الملاحقات والمضايقات. أمر طبيعي أن يتحدث محبو جعجع عنه على هذا النحو، لما يربطهم به وما يشدّهم اليه، وهم أصلاً لا يستطيعون أن يقولوا خلاف ذلك، اذ انهم ضمنا يدركون ان المناداة ببراءته تعني براءتهم، وان اخلاء سبيله يعني الافراج عنهم، وان اعادة الاعتبار اليه تعيد اليهم الاعتبار، وهذا ما فقدوه بعد اعتقاله، وحلّ "قواته" وتهجيرهم أو رميهم في السجون. غير ان الوضع ليس بالسهولة التي يرونها، ولا بالطريقة التي يتحدثون بها. فالحكم على سمير جعجع اذا أريد له ان يكون دقيقا وصحيحاً وعادلاً، يفترض ان يتم من خلال محاكمة دقيقة وصحيحة وعادلة، أي بلا ضغوط، بعيداً عن مؤيديه القادرين على تشويه الحقائق نتيجة تبعيتهم المطلقة لشخصه، أو اعدائه الذين يستطيعون التأثير على الوقائع بسبب كراهيتهم الشديدة له. ولذلك فمن البديهي أن يقف جعجع وحيداً أمام القانون، القانون الذي ما برح يقول انه غير بريء لأنه مجرم، وغير مظلوم لأنه خائن، وغير مفترٍٍ عليه لأنه لص. سمير جعجع مجرم لأنه قتل الوصولية، أقدس مقدساتنا، فهو لم يتزلّف ولم يجامل ولم يتودّد لأي شخص، لم يفعل ما نفعله كل يوم. فيقف عند باب زعيم او متنفّذ أو مسؤول، لم يشهر بهذا كي يرضي ذاك، لم يذهب الى مكان خلسة كي يخرج من آخر في العلن، ولم يُصفّق لأحد حين كان قوياً ليبتعد عنه في زمن الضعف، كما لم يجلس يفتش عن دور له في غرفة الانتظار. وسمير جعجع خائن، لقد خان الكذب، هذا العهد الذي قطعناه بين بعضنا البعض، هو لم يتكلم بلسانين ولم يظهر بوجهين، لم يقل في العتمة شيئا ليقول عكسه في الضوء، لقد مارس السياسة بشذوذ، كما خاض الحرب كما صنع السلام، من غير أن يراعي الأوضاع ويساير الظروف ويتوقف عند الاعتبارات، فهدد مصالحنا، وخربط حساباتنا، وعرض الرياء الذي فينا للخطر. وسمير جعجع لص، لقد سرق منا الحياء، الحياء الذي يجعلنا نتردّد او نتراجع او نحار، هذا أدخله معه الى السجن، وتركنا نفعل ما نشاء، نصنع القبائح علانية، نمارس الفساد غير محرجين وننشر الرذائل بكل فخر. هذا السجين الوحيد النحيل، هذا الصامت الناطق، الحاكم المحكوم المحروم من الهواء والشمس غير بريء، لذا يجب اطلاقه، ونحن اعتدنا ان نعتقل الأبرياء، ونسجن المظلومين، ونحاكم العزل. انه غير بريء لأنه سبب شقاوتنا، فهو قد اتعسنا وأربكنا وأتعبنا ونكّد لنا كل عيش. انه غير بريء لأنه لم يحفظ رأسه، لقد حافظ رغما عنا على كرامتنا، ولن نغفر له، لكننا سنعفو عنه

I tend to respectfully disagree with the last few entries to stop debating issues, and only focus on the positives....
I agree that some Entries were not appropriate at times (to say the least!) to advance a debate, but I have learned from lots of intelligent ones.... and thanks to the Webmaster who regularly edits this guest book, to take care of the rest!
I think a civilized debate is essential when REAL problems do exist, so we can find REAL solutions... and we had and still have our share of REAL problems in our beloved town Machghara and Lebanon... hence the need for a healthy debate!
We can all question if there is a benefit generated by a debate on this Website... and I personally think that indeed there is. To listen to, let alone being engaged in a civilized debate can only stimulate the Mind and allow you to learn about the "OTHER"... and I want the "OTHER" to know more about ME.... not ME personally... but to know more on how ONE Machgharanian think, and what constitutes a problem and an acceptable solution for ME... hopefully the OTHER would learn from ME as much as I would learn from HIM... so we can recognize and respect our differences and find a common ground. All of this because: I want to live BETTER with YOU in Machghara...
And lastly, to accommodate the people who don't like to see debates, I like to propose a solution for this problem! and I understand that it might require some more precious work to the Webmaster:
We can continue to have this CUMULATIVE guest book where entries are placed in a chronological order.... but a User can create their own sections depending on the Subject/Questions (ie. Schools, Religion...) they would like to discuss.... the replies are made directly from within the section and duplicates of these entries are placed in cumulative guest book.... so the User can visit the sections that would not offend him/her...
and finally, I wander if the Webmaster can “Number” Entries, since most of us are not signing our names... so we can refer to entry number when a reply is made... Thanks! Y.G.

As they say in English ( a starving college student), but you did a good job I could have not agreed with you more, it is time for a fresh start, time to look at the past and learn from it so we do not make the same mistake for the future.
Machghara will one day come back alive despite those who are negative at the end
it is our town and our children’s future town.
Really it is time to focus on what is best suites all if we‘re to pass this town to the next generation. It takes a strong person to overcome hard feelings and bad experiences let us show that we are the children of this town put our hands together and bring it back to light.

ان مشغرة تملك الكثير من اليد العملة التقنية و العقول النيرة من كتاب و صحفيين و رجال سلطة و حتى راسماليين في بلد ليبرالي.
و بالرغم من ذلك نجدها فارغة مهملة ,لا يوجد فيها فرص عمل أو حتى ترفيه للشباب الذين يستمرون بالهجرة أو النزوح
لماذا و ما هو الحل برأيكم

i like if we focus on subjects related to our nice village and here is a subject i suggest: machghara own skilled people, brightning minds,authors, scientists,workers, even capitalist. BUT if you look to tht viallage you still see it empty and you still see that there are no opportunity for young inside it so they search to emigrate from it. what do you think? what should be done if my perception was wright

I am reading on site the comments about the nuns, its funny because, my
father sometimes says to me "ya de3an marba el Rahbet" when I say something
disrespectful or swear at my son .At least we learned what respect means back
then. How many of you who graduated from the “Saint Coeur” School became
Lawyers, Doctors, etc…
Give these Creatures some Credits, they have been with us through good and bad
times. And enough is enough please leave this site pleasant, for people like us
who live in this wild western world, when we like to visit the site we like to
hear about old friends and see beautiful photos of Machghara .

This is a warning, to all the people of Machghara we have alternative schools now with credentials and all, you may remove your kids from the misery others experienced. other wise you have no one to blame but your arrogant selves. Check out the school in (alnaby) maybe your kids will learn something that will benefit them in the hereafter instead of something that will send them to hell fire.

بعد أن تم نقد مدرسة الراهبات على المكشوف وبشكل لاذع لكن ضمن الحقائق، نأتي على سيرة المدرسة الرسمية التي تعلم فيها يوما نابغة لبنان والجنوب حسن كامل الصباح، هذه المدرسة كانت وما زالت مدرسة الفقراء وقد خرجت الآلاف، لو أن خريجيها الذين بلغوا المراتب العليا في التعليم والمهن ينشئون نادي خريجي المدرسة الرسمية في مشغرة ويهتمون بها فسوف يتبدل حالها الى الافضل بالطبع، فتحت الجلسة

انا أنصح كل الأهالي الذين يضعون اولادهم في مدرسة الراهبات لغاية الآن، ان يقيموا علاقات إجتماعية مع الراهبات وان يكرموهن ماديا ومعنويا ، وأن يشعروهن انهم الى جانبهن دائما ويمكنهن الاعتماد عليهم في الشدائد وعند الحاجة ، لا ينتهي دور الأهل بدفع القسط المدرسي أبدا ، فهذا القسط لن يذهب أبدا الى جيوب الراهبات الفقيرات الزاهدات، والانسان يبقى انسانا، والمشاعر الانسانية تبقى انسانية مهما حاول ان يقلد الملائكة، فكيف اذا انحرف هذا التقليد للملائكة مع التيار الطائفي والاخلاقي السائد بالبلد ، وثمة حاجات لا يمكن أن يستغني عنها بشري، وخصوصا التواصل الحضاري بكل أبعاده ، عليك ان تشعر بالراهبة وتدرك حاجاتها وأن تملأ بعض الفراغ الحاصل في حياتها كراهبة وخصوصا التواصل الاجتماعي وحنان العائلة المعوض عنه بحنان الجماعة أو الكتلة البشرية التي هي الآن في خدمتها ، الحياة أخذ وعطاء إذا أردت ان تأخذ عليك ان تعطي، وليس بالخبز وحده يحيا الانسان، والا لأ ؟

استكمالا لحديث مدرسة الراهبات وقبل الانتقال لمناقشة المدرسة الرسمية، لا بد من القول ان الأهالي كانوا يضعون ملء ثقتهم بهذه المدرسة وبشكل أعمى لأنها باعتقادهم وريثة ثقافة غربية متقدمة بالتعليم ووريثة ارساليات عندها الخبرة الطويلة في التعليم، خصوصا أن المدرسة الحكومية يديرها أساتذة ومدراء يحترمون أنفسهم لدرجة انهم وضعوا أولادهم في مدرسة الراهبات عوضا عن المدرسة التي يعلّمون بها، وبالطبع لا أحد كان يأمل من البلدية أن تراقب عمل المدرسة الحكومية وأن تطورها فأبناء أعضاء البلدية هم أيضا يتعلمون في مدرسة الراهبات ، وحيث ان المدرسة الخاصة هي مدرسة راهبات فهي كانت الملجأ الوحيد للهروب من المدرسة الرسمية. أين أخطأ الأهل ؟ لكن قبل ان نسأل هذا السؤال علينا أن ندرك أن الأهل لا يتمتعون بالقدر الكافي من الوعي ولا من الجرأة ولا من الاستعداد، لمتابعة أوضاع أبنائهم في المدرسة، حتى ولو سمعوا ان أستاذا مثلا كان يمضع مادة مخدرة تصدر رائحة غريبة عندما يدخن السجائر، وكان هذا الأمر مجرد نكتة أو حجة جيدة عندما كان يُسأل الطالب عن علاماته في مادة الرياضيات فهو كان يقول ان كان مسطّل أثناء المحاضرة، إذن اخطأ الأهل عندما تخلوا عن أمر المتابعة وأوكلوا أمور أولادهم بالكامل للإدارة بينما الأولاد مسؤول عن حياتهم بكامل تفاصيلها أولياء أمورهم،.......وللحديث تتمة

Reviewing entries on this very important subject of physical punishment in
Machghara Schools, please allow me to summarize what I have learned:
- Physical punishment of Students occurred throughout the years in Machghara
Schools.
- Affected individuals by this abuse were tormented and scarred even after years
of its occurrence.
- Concern that physical punishment is still occurring presently in Machghara
Schools.
- General consensus that physical punishment against children and adolescents
should be condemned and banned from Schools.
Obviously religious discrimination and psychological abuse in School are issues
of equal importance, but unfortunately they are quite subjective and easily
debated from both sides.
I believe that after this debate, We should at least notify the Schools in Machghara (Saint-Coeur, Public Schools….), that serious issues have been raised on this Website concerning physical punishment in their Schools. We would like them to REVIEW the different VIEWS expressed on this Website (even though some entries are quite harsh!!!), and that We would like their official reply concerning their CURRENT position concerning PHYSICAL PUNISHMENT in their respective Schools.
Please let us know what you think concerning the above, and I wonder if any volunteers in Machghara would notify Directors of the various schools (hardcopy of discussions if no Web access)….
We can debate these subjects forever, but I believe no serious change will occur on the large scale unless the most responsible parties are engaged in this debate… At least We can try!!!!

A teacher is A teacher and shouldnt care about the background and religion of a student. if it is a christian school it shouldnt discriminate moslim kids and moslim schools shouldnt discriminate christian kids. And about that guy that is saying that we are not wled asel... Well we didnt see or learned the Osool at your school ... lOOOl.... When someone says his opinion and experience on something he is suddenly bala asel.....That is why there will never be peace in lebanon because we dont respect each others opinion. bY THE WAY i partlly agree with mr Y.G when he said that Nuns should not bear
the sole blame for these abuses, but Society, including our Parents, was partly
responsible and in most cases they were encouraging them..... I agree with him
on that... And i would like to say to the guy who said something about

So if somebody tells the truth or express what he had experienced or what he
feel than he is bad and not "IBN ASeL".Believe me mister we are Awlad asel but I
think its just too difficult for you to accept reality..These things happened
for real and were done by people who have NO ASEL.I think that all these
emotional reactions are a proof that these things ( the sectarian
discrimination) where not sporadic but a policy managed by the whole school.
The important difference between the violence at "Saint coeur" and other schools is that at SAint coeur it was Sectarian and at other schools it wasn't. That is just a fact and a reality we experienced and we have the right to mention it.
So YA IBN el ASL we are proud of who we are and we are proud that we are able to express our feeling in a peacefull way and not by the stick (MASTARA).
And what I also would like to say that is when we mention these violence we are not mentioning it to attack the nuns because they are nuns or because they have an other religion than ours, but just because they did it...it is that simple ..Facts..And it is important for all this ex-students to express their feeling so they are more able to come over their traumatic and bad experience at school. For me I have a lot of Christian (best) friends and contacts and I don't feel or experience any difference or hate...I just like to say what i feel about something

regarding your comments about the nuns school and your wishes that you never
went there and been subjected to prayers from other religion. Maybe the nuns and
their behavior were the worst thing ever happened, but the fact remains that
this was a religious school that was based on and around Christianity. For you
as a moslem and I respect you religion and your belief and I don't agree with
the nuns reactions to your prayer, I will even go as far as apologizing for
their stupid behavior towards you. But again you must remember that the school
was a private Christian religious school, you and your parents chose to go to
that school and get an education because you knew as bad as it was, maybe it was
the best one around. Still as of today we have over 60% of the kids are from the
Moslem faith but yet still come to this school. Why is that? one last
question... What would happen to a Christian child if he or she went to a moslem
religious school, and how will he or she be accepted? maybe it was not so bad
for you after all. I grew up in that school but learned to care, love and defend
my classmates without thinking twice about their religion. Maybe I grew up in a
more tolerant home than you did.

لو بيرجع الزمن لورا كنت بتمنى ما فوت ابدا على مدرسة الراهبات لأني قضيت فيها ابشع ايام حياتي، صعبة كتير انك تعيش ببيئة بتحس فيها على طول انك دخيل عليها وقبلانينك على مضض، تصور انك كل يوم بيبلش نهارك غلط ، بحكم كونها مدرسة مسيحية من حق الطلاب المسيحيين انهم يصلوا على طريقتهم كل يوم الصبح ومن بعد العودة من الفرصة ، انت الصبح يا بترتل معهم صلاة ما خصك فيها ، او بتصلي على ذوقك وممكن تتوجه الك ملاحظة متل مثلا اذا قرأت الفاتحة ومسحت ايديك على وجهك بتسمعك الراهبة انك شو عم تغسل وجهك؟ ما غسلته اليوم ببيتك بعد؟ أو بيطلعوا فيك بالورب، وبأحسن الحالات اذا سكتت بتبين فورا انك جسم غريب ، بقى نهارك بيبلش غلط كيف بتتصور يكفي ؟ ونفس الشي بساعات القداس وساعات تعليم الدين المسيحي لازم يلاقوا حل للأجسام الغريبة يعني للمسلمين بالمدرسة المسيحية حتى لو كانوا النص، وبعدين شي مؤلم انك تشوف راهبة كل يوم وهي انسانة حاكمة على حالها بالاعدام ومثال سيء جدا عن عيش الحياة ، انت ضمنيا غير مؤمن بصوابية تفكير هالانسانة وصعب كتير تتقبلها كمعلمة الك أو تتقبل أي رأي منها، فكيف اذا كان رأيها عبارة عن أوامر مضطر تنفذها ، فشو كان الله جابرني حط حالي كل هالفترة ببيئة صعبة انا ما بعيش الا حياة واحدة، لو بيرجع الزمن لورا

hi again . sorry if am doing some mistakes in my comment. anyway what am saying before that there is a gap in our educational systems not only in sains coeurs school but in others too , and to the person that justify the need for beating our children , i had a few words for him , that if u still thinking in that way! i think u don't got any benefit from ur education , and let me say before , that our days is so different than the early days that u been talking about , and children should be treated as i say before in a gently way that make him a school lover not to hate it and the date that he born in . one thing more to add it , take that example in USA , and u'll find that ur point of view is unacceptable and soon u'll be judged.

i don't know . i am trying to be positive. i am not blaming the nuns as i mentioned before. but i am blaming the teachers, i don't think they were loving us and treating us fairly. i don't think i am objective, but i cant accept the idea that i can forgive them especially that inside me there are a theory which say that they knew wrong from the
right but they kept themselves on the wrong side.
i do respect your comment and your advices and i think that they are fruitful. AND SINCE THE PRESENT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT the question is : " do you think that these tutors who were beating should stay in these schools ?" the answer inside me is "no" and i am not following my feeling. but i am not convinced that they should stay. they followed the old methods and there should be newer tutors with more positive ideas and with willingness to make approaches to students. and the most most important is that some people still see that there still abuses in schools of machghara . what are you waiting to present cases and evidences in order to open the eyes of the society and believe me i am not writing just to writing. i was really hurt and i don't like the others to be hurt

I'm not an expert in education, and I am certain that some of you would know much more about this subject, but I will bore with you my understanding to the "Punishment" vs. "Positive Reinforcement" theories in Behavioral Analysis, that are valid in Education, Parenting, Relationships.... and sometimes in Politics!
"Punishment": needs no introduction or elaboration: used to decrease certain (usually negative) behaviors... We are quite familiar with this popular method in the Middle East: at home, in school (ie: Signal that was mentioned in previous entry….) and not forget in Politics. This is a favorite method used by Al-Quaeda when dealing with the US: We will destroy you as long as you don’t change your policies towards the Middle East…. And it happens to be Mr. Bush’s Administration favorite approach: “Based on your past record: We will destroy you…. Period!!!”….This vicious circle would usually perpetuate the Cycle of Violence, Rebellion behavior until one of them is defeated or a change in approaches occur….
"Positive Reinforcement": When attempting to increase the likelihood of a behavior occurring in the future, We Praise or Reward that behavior. If for example I want to change the “Signal” concept used in some schools and I want to apply "Positive Reinforcement" I will propose the following: instead of punishing a kid that speaks Arabic when not supposed to, I would reward the kid that didn’t (give a small bonus on next exam), and I would not miss an opportunity to praise a kid that has a bad past record as soon as small desirable change (intentional or accidental) occurs.
And finally we cannot forget another form of Abuse toward Children and Young
Adults: Bullying (being singled out and abused by other children)… Which was
quite common in and outside School in Machghara…. That is a common cause to low
Self-Esteem and Depression in Children… Any comments/experiences on that
subject?

Freedom of speech is sacred and sanctified and became a part of the basic rules of the human rights. But when you criticize you have to keep a minimum requirement of objectivity and neutrality in your proposed opinion or else you become subjective, prejudiced and discriminatory in the reader’s eye.
Violence in schools was a way used and may still be in use not only in Machghara and Lebanon but in the whole Middle East and many other places in the world. Focusing on the nuns and their abuse based on religious mentality is simply unfair. Abusing students was known worldwide regardless the background and religion believes, until the abuse became normal and now it’s a part of our heritage and folklore ( Go to
"Kaser Moussa" in "beit el dein" and witness a full scene of beating, abuse and violence,
"kasser moussa" is a part of our heritage No?).
There is also 100 of books in different language treating this issue. I’m not defending this behavior, I totally condemn it. I’m just saying it was a part of a “life style” I remember this old saying by our parents to the teachers“ El lahmet la ilkoun ou el 3admet la ilna” Meaning keep beating our kids to the bones . I never heard about a student getting punished or penalized for having his homework done or memorizing his lessons or having a great conduct. The idea was to punish the lazy student “al kasslan”. By increasing the punishment level you’re helping the student to stay a head, this is true (not physical punishment) to a certain extend. Now in our days, communicating with students and showing them what’s wrong and what’s right is the method in effect and agreed on, maybe the future will prove it wrong and studies will create a new methods! So never mind the nuns, let’s be grateful to these sisters and teachers-Yes nothing less than grateful- because their finger prints left a good mark in every heart of us.
Despite all the difference in opinions, learning foreign languages is a plus and always comes in handy, and saying there was a lack in Arabic teaching this is simply not true. So thanks to these nuns for teaching me French and English and I always wished they taught me more languages.
This is certainly the place to share your ideas and opinions but before writing please revise your thoughts just like Mr. “Y.G” and many other fellows that don’t sign their names (this is a new style, before every comment had a signature) I wonder Why?

hi everybody , about the proposal that been treated in the last few days which concern the educational system in machghara and specially that related to "saint coeur " school. my comment on that subject is about the " signals " systems that been mentioned before and which been executed there since ever , that system was created by the responsables sisters and it purpose is to motivate students to learn and deal with the french language as good as possible by punishing these students as they are some criminals who
is doing something wrong , anyway my comment is : in place of motivating our children to speak the french language let us try to make them learn the basic of our language" the arabic language" cause as i know we had in our education system a big gap in learning the arabic language , and lets treat our children as they are a human being and treat them as they are one.

ايضا احب ان اقول اني اعتقد انه لا يمكن تبرير الخطأ الذي ارتكبه معظم المعنّفون لانّي ولمعرفتي بظروفهم كانوا يعرفون الصح من الخطأ, هذا الخطأ الذي وصفته الاديان والشرائع والتجربة اللتي اكتسبوها نتيجة تربيتهم لاطفالهم

اردت اثارة الموضوع لاعتقادي ان العنف المدرسي ما زال قائما في بعض مدارس مشغرة ولم اقصد فقط مدرسة الرهبات اللتي باعتقادي تخلت عن هذا الاسلوب بعدما كان متبنى من قبل طاقم من المعلمات اللئيمات وليس الراهبات اللاتي كنّ حسب علمي رمزا للحنان والمحبة
واعتقد ان توجيه اصبع الاتهام الى الراهبات هو ظلم
ولكن احب ان اضيف ان العنف كان موجودا في المدرسة الرسمية للصبيان حيث الروايات لا تحصى ولا تعد

Despite the fact that education and parenting standards are changing in the world, Mahchgara will remain the same. Authoritarian models still exists in families and schools. People may still believe that the “Rod” is the most effective means of discipline. Same parents are of the same view that the use of violence as a corrective method is acceptable, and in schools, some teachers still resort to various methods of physical or psychological mistreatment.

I never thought that I would be the one who would speak or write to defend Nuns... I feel compelled after what I read to do so...
I can only denounce Abuses (Verbal, Physical,...) and Favourism by the Nuns and Teachers alike, especially if they are still occurring presently... and I definitely would not accept that my child would be subject to such abuses...
But the idea of abusing a child in order to pressure them to better themselves was a common belief then, and it was ACCEPTED by PARENTS (exceptions do exist!) and Machghara Society in general... Perfectionism was the objective and nothing less was accepted. Being average was considered to be a failure, and constantly reminding you about your imperfections can only lead to less self-confidence and lower Ego... This approach has left deep scars in many of us... BUT I believe that THEY simply DID NOT KNOW BETTER...
It is a must to look back into our past, reflect and criticize in order to improve the future... but we must look at these abuses in the societal context we were in... Nuns should not bear the sole blame for these abuses, but Society, including our Parents, was partly responsible and in most cases they were encouraging them...
I can only imagine my children in years to come, seeing a Psychiatrist to discuss the abuses and pressures I inflicted on him!... He would discuss the fact that he was asked do better, to finish his homework (the little that he has!), to do his bed, not to listen to loud music, to come back home before midnight.... and that I discussed with him on what I thought would be a good carrier choice for him, and since then he never got over it!!!! I simply DO NOT KNOW ANY BETTER!
I would like to Thank the Nuns and Teachers who worked in the best of their abilities, in their Societal Context, to deliver discipline and knowledge that helped few of us. They can take the credit for preparing many students to get a higher level of educations that lots of Machgharanians achieved...
Finally, I would also encourage Schools in Machghara to set up an elected
Parents Board, so that Parents would be more involved in decisions relating to
their childrens education

Dear "victimized by nuns"
"I feel your pain" but we must clarify that may be the nuns were sectarians at heart, but they were an "equal opportunity abuser" for both Christian and Muslim kids. I was a Christian student who served in church on daily basis, but never escaped the wrath of the Nuns. When my turn came for beating and verbal abuse, I was first in line. This comes from years of oppression by the convent toward the nuns, coupled with lack of fun or romance not even can they see a movie once in a while. These nuns looked at us and they realized that we were everything they were not. We were happy, young, fun loving, full of life and most importantly free. On the other hand they were ugly, overweight, deprived of any sex, they had to wear silly costumes, and they only took a bath once a month, no make-up, no perfumes, no men around to give them love. so when they got the itch, they were satisfied to beat the hell out of us. So my dear friend, don't feel so bad for being beaten by the nuns, think of it as a public service, or I should say "Nun service".

القرار 1559 بمضمونه يكرّس لبنان كدولة، ويعيد موقعها في الأمم المتحدة ويحترم استقلالها وسيادتها وكامل أراضيها، ولا أعرف لماذا يريدون تصويره للناس وكأنه قرار استعماري أو قرار انتداب أجنبي!! شرعة الأمم المتحدة يدين بها الجميع، وهي موقّعة من قبل كل الدول بما فيها سوريا!! إذاً يجب احترام هذا القرار الدولي الذي هو لمصلحة لبنان فقط.

Well, how funny some of you are talking about your past, I hope you learned your lessons and I hope those of you who read these letters learn from them also.
This is a healthy debate, yes we do have discrimination in our town, noticed I used the word have it is up to us to change that mentality by learning to live side by side as human beings.
What can I tell you, we have the past to learn from, so the future generations can learn to live, and tolerate each other.
Most of the teachers we had needed to learn how to be teachers; they lacked the understanding of what the responsibility of the teacher is.
I will not name those who were nasty and bigots, and racist and, and so on and so forth, but, I will mention the teachers who I still remember the warmth, the smile, the compassionate, they displayed because they deserve it. Ma’alme' Norma, esstaz Nezam, ezztaz Amen, esstaz John El Zamar, and ma’alme Wedad, I want to thank them for leaving good marks on me because
as a human being you will always cherish those who treated you with kindness.
Thanks to the above mentioned and others I cannot remember them now.
And I always try to visit with them whenever I visit our town.
If any one has information about ma’alme' Wedad, please let me know, she used to live beneath the
"maddrasse alfouqa alhukomeyah" of course.
Remember treat others like you like to be treated.

I went till the age of 9 to the "saint coeurs"... (i forgot how to write it ) i can say that i didn't have a good time there...
When i look back i only see sadness...fear....pain.... humiliation... maybe for other students more than for me but it hits me as well.... and the nuns there did discriminate.. it is wrong to close our eyes for such a problem.
I laughed so much when someone here said El Khiam" prison is a holiday trip in comparison to it... But it is really true.. that guy isn't lying... And i remember the Moral class too... She took our food and fruit and bonbons that our parents gave to us. Maybe she had to give herself some Moral lessons... I only liked it because they stopped the lessons when we had moral lessons...LoL....
But i have to say that not only at the "saint coeurs" they used to beat children. That also happened at other schools in machghara and in whole lebanon. :"(
The quality of the lessons where good but the teachers made it hard for us to love school and going to school...
When we moved to Holland and i saw how teachers treated their students here.. i couldn't believe it first..
I think that times has changed and that teachers in lebanon are different now..( i think) but of course there are still a lot of abuse at schools and i don't think that beating a kid like an animal is a good way to teach that kid something.
I would never accept it for my own child to be beaten or humiliated...

i beleive that each one of us has a story (muslim or christian) to tell about his school and remember that there is a great risk that beating student is still in machghara s schools and this is why i am opening that subject again. they did not give us the opportunity to love the school they encourages us to be rebbels i remember that it was a great honor for a student during his teens years to make a fight with his tutor.

je crois qu'on peut pas tout simplement critiqué les soeurs d'un point de vus d'une seul partie. Idem on peut pas dire que les soeurs frappaient seulement les musluments et qu'elles oubliaient les crétients. peut-être qu'elles étaient dans le temps sévères et méchantes même. on peut dire que c'était du au faite qu'elles sont des "m3ansin". Mais maintenant tout a changé, ces femmes sont devenues plus éducuées, plus raisonnables, plus honnettes... Enfin on n'a pas le droit dire qu'elles sont complétements méchantes car nous sommes tous -les étudiants des saints coeurs machghara- le bon exemple dans nos domaines et c'est du â eu même s'elles nous gifflaits.

I would like to comment on the "Abuse in schools"" and especially in Machghara by the "Masseurs" "Rahbat".
"El Khiam" prison is a holiday trip in comparison to it...They beated us like we were in a prison. It was really horrible and for me the most horrible part of it was that we learned sectarianism "Taifiyye" on the hands of these nuns and teachers. I went to this school in the 1980s till 1990. Even as young children we could notice the different treatment. Muslim kids were beaten brutally hard. Christian children on the other side were not beaten or maybe very softley...I still hate them (the nuns and teachers) who beated us. I would never send my children to a nun school. They are are too close minded and full of frustration and hate and they are hypocrits too..If you remember the "MORAL".. Teache that God wants us to love each other and beating the hell out of us on the other side....When this "Shahade"tried to take our money and fruit for the "POOR"". I always wondered: Machghara is a war zone and there are a lot of poor people. Didnt the Masseur think about them? I think the best thing we can do is to "BOYCOT" this Abou Ghreib ...So we must not send our children to it...You never know what could happen to them in the name of keeping order and MORAL

hi again i would like to hear your views about that subject "abuses in school" and using beating as a way to punish students. i like to ask that question since beating were used in the schools of machghara from not a long time and i think that it s still occur.
